There should be a warning to not use this drill for more than ten or so minutes if grinding or brushing when used locked at maximum speed. After ten or fifteen minutes of continuous use, my drill started sputtering. Looking inside, I discovered that the brushes are mounted in the same red plastic as the housing. One of the brush holders had softened the plastic, causing it to misalign against the commutator. Otherwise, it’s the best drill for the money. Just allow it to cool down during prolonged use.

This is my first ever Skil purchase. I’ve always heard good things about the Skil brand and now I know why. Combined with the appropriate bits, this drill has tackled wood, plastic, and metal all without bogging down or overheating. The build quality is much better than other drills i’ve handled and the price was very competitive giving it excellent value.

I bought the Skil 6277 at Walmart about 2 weeks ago (April 21, 2012) because it was similar to the Skil 6220 that I had been using.

My trigger does not actuate the motor until it reaches about 500 rpm. Since the specs list the no-load variable speed at 0-2000, this is a problem.

I contacted Skil Customer Service the next day to see if my particular specimen was faulty. The Customer Service representative wrote back that the drill was designed that way.

This is a shame because I would have given it a 5 star rating if it worked as Skil claimed. The best rating that I can give this is a 3 because it is a solid, comfortable, and versatile tool that mutilates screw heads.

I might still return this to Walmart if Skil does not provide customer service.

I bought this Skil Power Drill thinking that it would last as long as my old one did. My old one lasted 5 years. I got home. I screwed in 5 screws into wood. I smelled a bad smoke smell. The engine burnt out! If you want to spend $40 to screw in five little screws, then this is the product for you. Otherwise, save your money and go with another product that’s a little more expensive. Cheap isn’t alwaYS GOOD.
